Toothbrush Care Is Important

DSC08963At times i ask my patients to bring the toothbrush they are using. Sometimes it brings very strange brushes to me.

Majority of tooth brushes patients bring resemble this toothbrush. The frayed bristles are quite injurious to gums and teeth.

Once the patients are made aware the injurious effects of such a toothbrush, they get motivated to take care of toothbrush. Normally, the brush bristles start curling outwards (“fraying”) after about 3 months. That’s the time to change the toothbrush.

There are two cases which need special mention. Once a person who was suffering from ‘pyorrhoea’, he brought a baby brush as he thought that brushing with a baby brush would be gentle for his teeth. He was motivated to use a proper adult toothbrush.

Many years ago i came across a family who were using a single brush –all of them using the same brush in the morning.

Just asking the patient at times about their oral hygiene regime brings out quite interesting myths and misconceptions to light.  DSC08964
