When this gentleman in his sixties came to me, i thought he had come to me for total balance. Total Balance is the term we use in Dentistry for removal of all remaining upper and lower teeth.
You are looking at his dental photograph — the way his most of teeth are badly worn out — many of these upto the level of roots — i thought he would ask me to take all those stumps out. No, i was wrong!
This gentleman seemed to be hard-core – he told me he has just come for dental check-up (thank God!) if i should get some treatment. He emphatically told me that he does not have any problem in any of his teeth and he is not having any difficulty in eating his meals either. Suggesting remvoal of all these stumps would have labelled me as a confirmed ‘fool’ judging the big confidence that this elderly uncle was bubbling with! When there is no problem to him, why would he listen to me!
I hope now you are catching headline of this post — 2x2s are not 4 always in practice! Well, i am not at all trying to encourage non-scientific temper in readers nor i wish to sound like one. Such cases are exception. Otherwise, as the tooth starts wearing down the person starts feeling sensitivity to hot and cold and it continue till the treatment is sought or it reaches the stage where it no longer matters as in this particular patient. However, all are not that lucky — as the tooth wearing down becomes advanced in many cases it lead to dental abscess and then they have to get the teeth extracted.
Now coming to a big question — how come this great man is saying All is well inspite of teeth in such a bad shape. It is because of Mother Nature’s reparative capacity — as the enamel and inner layer (dentin) keep on wearing down, a reparative process is simultaneouly going on inside the tooth — it is called secondary dentine or reparative dentin which is much tougher and the result of such repair is just infront of you. However, this process of repair or the amount of reparative dentin formed is variable — that explains the reason for such variations — some people start experiencing the symptoms so very early while the others like this gentleman are so comfortable with all this.
We commonly come across people with badly worn-out dentitions who are not willing to get anything done about those teeth!
