Cuts on Teeth Can’t Be Ignored

I have already written a number of posts concerning loss of tooth structure. Even then sometimes i feel that the message needs regular reinforcement. This thought comes to me particularly when i happen to see a patient like this whose picture i am placing at the end of this article.

This patient had come to me about 2-3 years ago. There were deep cuts on majority of teeth. This is called dental abrasion and most important reason for this problem is incorrect use of a toothbrush or dental twig (vern. datun). I had motivated him to use the toothbrush properly by demonstrating correct tooth brushing technique. Then i had done three fillings also as you can see two white fillings amongst upper teeth and and a filling on the lower molar.

These fillings are tooth colored fillings and are quite long-lasting. I sometimes happen to see some persons in which such fillings were placed 10-15 years ago and these are still functioning quite well. The name of this filling material is glass-ionomer cement and it has some great qualities like excellent adhesive properties -the way it chemcically unites with the tooth structure, it is cariostatic that it prevents caries as it contains fluoride and quite a few other remarkable features.

Another point i want to make here is that when the parents start experiencing hot and cold sensation is such teeth, they try to catch hold of some sensitivity tooth paste available in the market and start using these without consulting a dentist. No, it does not work– rather it compounds the problem as slight temporary relief may give a false sense of security and the loss of tooth structures goes on to the extent that it can involve the nerve of the tooth (dental pulp) –at that stage, tooth can’t be just simply restored. It requires root canal treatment and then artificial crown — which is quite expensive option, obviously not suitable for our masses in which a number of teeth are involved in a single mouth.

In this man also, this problem has occurred in the lower first premolar tooth. It can’t be filled directly, it would require root canal treatment. Other teeth will be suitably filled.

As you see in this patient cuts on teeth not only weaken tooth structure and lead to sensitive issues, these can also enhance caries risk. Better take proper care of your teeth –these are meant to last life long.
