This is the dental photograph of a 38year old man who had come to me yesterday with the chief complaint of dental stains. He is a non-smoker and does not use tobacco in any form.
It is but natural for you to think as to what is so great about the photograph of his teeth. Yes,there is something special. His teeth and gums are picture of health barring a few minor things.
Now, I would like to tell you that this man of 38years has never used a toothbrush for the first 20years of his life. He only used to clean his teeth using a dental twig –(from the plants like Azadirachta indica , Acacia sps etc.). In many countries these dental twigs are quite popular and are still in use.
At the age of 20years, he got a job and then he switched over to toothbrushing which he confesses he uses just twice or three a week.
Now the point is if is so irregular with his oral hygiene, how come his teeth and gums paint a picture of health. Of course, first and foremost he need to thank his genes. He told me that both of his parents also have perfect dentition.
Again coming to the USP of this photograph, I rarely come across such healthy teeth at this age and of course if the guy is neglecting his oral hygiene, then the condition of gums is generally very bad. But in this case, the gums are perfectly normal –colour is coral pink, scalloped margins and quite interesting you can notice orange-peel like appearance of the gums in the upper arch –we call this appearance “Stippling” and it is an important characteristic of healthy gums.
No, not at all, I am in way saying that we can afford to be careless with our oral hygiene regime. We just can’t. But since dental diseases are such a multi-factorial entity and have a complex etiology with interplay of so many factors like heredity, diet, saliva composition etc –so on and so forth. Trust me we are still trying to unravel the mysteries of Mother Nature.
By the way, I have briefed this man about the importance of proper oral hygiene regime. And one think I want to add that because of his faulty way of using dental twig and toothbrush , he has developed some “cuts” (abrasions) on the teeth which require restorations.
Otherwise, he is perfectly fit from dental point of view.
