Faulty Toothbrushing Leads to Dental Abrasion

Abrasion of teeth

In this photograph, why there are so many cuts on these teeth? – it is because the method of toothbrushing of this gentleman is faulty. I daily get so many patients in my surgery.

As a result of faulty tooth brushing technique or over-zealous toothbrushing the teeth get abraded. It leads to such troughs on the outer surfaces of teeth.

Problems to patient? – at times there is sensitivity to hot and cold and for this reason they approach us. At times, there are no complaints but during routine dental check-up we come across such deep “cuts” on teeth. And in many cases, people don’t seek dental help till these abrasions get so deep that it leads to excruciating pain. Reason? —Nerve of the tooth (“dental pulp”) gets exposed!

How do  we manage such patients? –First of all, person needs to be motivated for correct tooth-brushing technique, applying optimum pressure while brushing and discarding toothbrushes once the bristles have become frayed.
Next step is proper restoration of these “cuts” –thanks to modern dentistry, we have a lot of aesthetic tooth-colored materials with us which can be used successfully for repairing these deep cuts which remain in place for many years (if not decades!) – I have seen many such restorations after 20years and these are doing well. But the condition is — man need to correct himself — no, nothing, just his brushing. What were you thinking ?
