Literally I shudder at the sight of sweet shops selling stuff laden heavily with artificial colours. That’s why I am all praise for the commendable work being done by America’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which strictly controls the use of synthetic colours there which includes –
– the type of foods in which it can be used.
– the maximum amounts allowed to be used.
– How it should be identified on the food label.
That is America and there all color additives are subject to ongoing safety review as science and methods of testing continue to improve. Today morning, i happened to look at – How safe are color additives?
I have not heard about about such strict control over the quality and use of artificial colors and additives elsewhere at least in developing nations. Hardly I have heard anything about the control part –what to talk of strict control!
The problem becomes complex as the majority of consumers are unaware of the dangers that such sub-standard, adulterated artificial colors and food additives pose for their health.
At times i talk with people on the issue. Most of times, I get the reply – “ we take such eatables only once a while.” But that is no solution. Today so many food products are laden with such harmful colors that knowingly or unknowingly we do consume a lot of such stuff in a day. And more worrying is the issue that all such stuff has got a cumulative effect.
Obviously one exposure does not warrant concern but multiple exposures over a lifetime can add up. And there are all sorts of health problems in which these color additives have been implicated.
Let’s ponder over the fact to which limits can we stretch our vital organs – heart, liver, kidneys etc. Anything we put in our mouth has to go to our intestines, liver, kidneys etc for absorption, assimilation and excretion. And what if the stuff starts damaging the those soft “vitals”. Sorry, the damage done is irreversible.
Better we look out what we are eating – after reading the above article I shall remember it whenever I am reaching for a cold drink, straw-berry ice-cream, or custard-gelly I shall be aware —-not necessarily it will prevent me from taking a bite, at the same time, I shall be making an informed choice knowing well its negative health effects.
They say –Knowledge is power but Choice is consumer’s own. That’s why they also say – Our health is in our hands..
